Aspartame is one of the most popular artificial sweeteners in the world. It has been approved by the FDA and has been used as a substitute for sugar since 1981. Aspartame was first created to be an ant-diabetic drug, but it also had another use: helping people with weight loss!  Let’s look at aspartame risks.

There are some hidden dangers of sweeteners that you should know about before consuming any products containing this ingredient. In this blog post, I will discuss why you should avoid using or including aspartame in your diet, if possible.

What you will learn

What is in it?

It is made up of two main components: the first, Aspartic Acid is an amino acid that stimulates your nervous system to release a chemical called Phenylalanine. The second component in this artificial sweetener is Phenylalanine, which as I have just mentioned can increase levels of dopamine. These two ingredients are not very beneficial for your health.

Where do you find aspartame?

  • Diet sodas
  • Sugar-free gum
  • Some Yogurts and ice cream
  • Some desserts and baked goods, such as cookies, cakes, pies, and pastries
  • Some salad dressings
  • Flavor packets for water

The Aspartame Risks:

  • side effects
  • safety
  • risk of cancer
  • poisoning

Side Effects

Aspartame is an artificial sweetener that has been linked to a number of health risks and side effects. Some of these include:

  • Headache, dizziness, and depression
  • Nausea
  • Heart palpitations and rapid heartbeat
  • Migraines
  • Weight gain
  • Mood alterations

FDA says it’s safe, but EU disagrees

The FDA approved the use of Aspartame in 1974, but it was only for limited use. The European Union did not approve it until the 1990s and even then, only for use in dietary foods. Isn’t this a bit questionable?

Increases your risk of Cancer

Aspartame consumption has been linked to certain types of cancer.  Let’s look at a few studies:

  • In 2002, the Center for Science in the Public Interest petitioned to have it banned because of studies linking it to cancerous tumors .
  • It was first approved by the FDA in 1974 and then again in 1981 for limited use as a result of studies linking it to brain tumors.
  • In 2007, a study found that people who consumed more than five servings  per day were more likely to develop leukemia.
  • Some studies have found an increased risk in lymphoma
  • Other research has shown it may increase risks for breast cancer or brain tumors.

Poisoning

Bet you never heard of this but it is a real thing.  I actually met someone first-hand that suffered from this.  It is called Aspartame poisoning and many people are suffering from this without even knowing about it. You may have aspartame poisoning if you feel light-headed, dizzy and you have a headache. This type of poisoning also causes difficulties in breathing or swallowing.

How to heal from aspartame poisoning?

The best way to heal from aspartame poisoning is to stop using it and get the proper treatment for the condition.

It has been found that those who drink a lot of diet sodas or use products with this additive are more likely to suffer these side effects.  For a quick sweet fix try taking natural remedies such as ginger, honey, olive oil or lemon juice. Ween yourself off slowly, as this will help with withdrawal symptoms.

The best thing to do is avoid it altogether!

Conclusion

It’s crazy to think that many people believe what is sold on the shelves is safe for our bodies. It is not! When it comes to our health, we have to be careful and vigilant about what we put in or on ourselves. Hopefully this blog was able to shed some light and help you make educated decisions about what goes in your body.

Read labels ….and remember that you only get one body- so be kind to it!
