YSL Babydoll mascara

One gift I will almost certainly be buying for my girl friends this Christmas is Sali Hughes’ new beauty book, Pretty Honest. In a world of advertising-led beauty writing and product placement, Sali (the Guardian Weekend mag’s columnist) is a swoosh of slick black liner that cuts through all the dated, smudgy shadow around her.

I love beauty treats, but only when they come intelligently and genuinely recommended – India Knight’s book The Shops is great for this, and I do like Stylist magazine’s tried and tested page, where three writers of different personal style and colouring all try out the same trend. Sometimes, you know, peacocky eyeshadow is just too big and bruised for your tiny eyes, and we need to be honest about that.

As I may have mentioned on here, I’m most likely to spend money on a classic, natural product that enhances the heck out of your existing face rather than anything trend led. This autumn I treated myself to a pricier mascara than usual (having always sworn by Bourjois and Rimmel numbers) – the sumptuous gold-encased YSL Babydoll.

It hasn’t disappointed – yes, it’s nearly £20 (I KNOW, sorry mum, starting that savings account imminently), but the clever, subtle-looking rubber brush coats lashes really smoothly and neatly, meaning you can do a few coats with no spidery, flaky clumping. It means your lashes get properly dense and Bambi-esque, something that, unlike my baby sister, I was not naturally gifted with. And it’s as black as a raven’s wing on a pitch dark night in a Dark Sky Park.

It’s so effective I’ve actually worn less makeup in general since buying it – a clean base with just rosy lip balm and/or cheek tint (ideally one used as both, am I right?) is just right for daytime with added Babydoll. Save £20 for a little self-gift this Christmas.

Three more I adore right now:
1. Baume de Rose by Terry in Cherry Bomb – petal soft and moisturising. £35
2. Barry M nail polish in Raspberry – so festive it really should be Cranberry. £2.99
3. Rimmel Stay Blushed! cheek tint in Pop of Pink – tiding me over until next payday and more Posie Tint. £3.99
