Splitting the bill between a large group of people (especially people you don’t know that well) has got to be one of the most awkward processes on earth. You’ve got your people who will only pay for their exact starter, side salad and diet coke, and the people who shared all of the wine and sharing platters so have no idea of their cut. Most people just want to split it evenly, but I’ve seen many a bored waiter loitering while people tap away on their phone calculators and count out their pound coins.
NO MORE. I have seen the future, and it is Flypay. A few weeks back I went to Wahaca on Charlotte Street with a couple of friends, and they got overly excited about the QR code stuck on the corner of our table. ‘It’s amazing!’ they raved. ‘We can split the bill on our phones and not even have to call over the waiter.’
Being a huge misanthropist, this sounded way too good to be true. But within about 2 minutes, courtesy of the chain’s excellent WiFi, I had downloaded Flypay, checked out the contents of our table’s bill and paid my third directly through the app.
I got similarly excited in another restaurant last week when I glimpsed a QR code on the table, but it turned out to be a different app, this time to get your waiter’s attention. Are we going to be popping Champagne corks and checking the calorie count of our sushi via apps before long? I do hope not, but Flypay is a genuinely useful one and I can’t wait for it to be rolled out further.
